This week I am watching Verdi’s Falstaff, the Riccardo Muti production. The plot covers The Merry Wives of Windsor with some speeches from Henry IV.
Something about the staging and the perspective of the painted backdrop makes the characters look huge. See clip.
The closing of Act I, when the wives decide on revenge against Falstaff was particularly merry.
Quel re delle pance,
ci ha ancora le ciance
del bel vagheggino.
The finale has these lines repeated:
Everything in the world is a joke.
We’re all deceived
